January 06 BCS or just BS?Take 'Championship' out of the BCS and you get exactly what the BCS is...BS! December 30 College Football isn't a real sportUtah 38 Georgia Tech 10
For weeks we've been hearing about this game here in Utah. We've heard that the Yellow Jackets, then ranked #24 in the country, were disappointed at playing a lowly football team like Utah. Certainly the numbers looked good for Georgia Tech. They were ranked 10th in the nation in defense and had stifled some of "THE BEST" programs in college football.
However...how do you know who is the best in college football?
Well you look at the polls.
And how are the polls figured?
Well a bunch of media writers and some computers put together a formula that determines who the best team is. (do you watch the lines in Vegas? do you know how often they're wrong?) Essentially the "BEST" teams are determined by people voting on who they think is the best. It resembles a popularity contest in some ways, but more specifically it is quite similar to "Professional Wrestling."
In Wrestling all the matches are decided out of the ring. (people in the south are putting up their dukes right now to tell me how Wrestling is real...just remember these are the same people who created the BCS and believe College Football is a sport)
In College Football thankfully the score of the game is determined on the field. However, how good a team is is NOT determined on the field. Much like wrestling it is determined by people who don't compete at, but instead sit in offices and decide who is the best team. The rankings of teams and the determination of the "BEST" team is a sham. If it isn't decided on the field it isn't a sport. When winners are determined in an office you could at best call it fantasy football.
Of course what is needed is a tournament, but much like Wrestling, there is good money to be made in picking the competitors and the winners. At some point College Football will become legitimate as a whole. Until then the only thing you can be sure of is that the winner of any game was the best team of that game.
Which takes us back to the embarrassment of Georgia Tech by Utah. It really wasn't as big a deal as anyone thought. How good is Georgia Tech? Well they are ranked by a bunch of people to be #24. What does that mean? Without a tournament it's an illegitimate ranking. Though I certainly feel comfortable making sport of College Football, it's unfortunate that at the highest levels it cannot be considered a sport itself. |
